Preet Na Jaane Reet (1966)

I realized that it’s been so long since I saw a movie. I can’t believe myself that I could survive without a dose of vintage movie for so long. I was finally at home the whole day yesterday and I couldn’t do without watching one. I opened my DVD/VCD box and I went through them. I first took out Char Dil Char Raahein, but I was in no mood of seeing tragedy. I am not sure if it really is a tragedy but Meena Kumari and Raj Kapoor put me off, inspite of Shammi Kapoor. I wanted to watch something entertaining and fun. I picked up Teesri Manzil, Professor and Dil Deke Dekho but I have seen all these movies so many times and I wanted to watch something new. So finally decided on Preet Na Jaane Reet. Though I had the VCD for quite a long time, I somehow hadn’t come across watching it yet. Then, I came across the songs while doing Rafi Sings for Shammi and was totally floored by Teri zulfen pareshan, Yun na dekho hume baar baar and Oh jaanewale sun zara yeh dil ka maajra. Haye…Rafi and Shammi, I can never get enough of them!

Seth Karamchand (Nasir Hussain) gets a telegram. Chandu, his man servant brings it to him and Sethji is extremely happy. Seeing his happiness Chandu asks :
Chandu : Is it from Chhote Babu?
Sethji : Yes. He has reached Bombay and will be coming here tomorrow.

Chandu rushes to the market to buy baingan (brinjal) for Baingan ka bharta and other favourite vegetables of Chhote Babu. Sethji warns him that Ashok must have developed a taste for Chicken Broth, Stew, Salad etc. and may not relish Chandu Kaka’s homemade food any more. But that doesn’t dampen Chandu’s spirit. He’s very sure that Chhote Babu will still savour his Chutneys and Bharta.

The scene shifts to another house. Husband (Siddhu? Since he’s not referred by name anywhere, I will call him Jijaji) is sitting and reading newspaper. Wife, Sharda (Shammi) comes screaming into the room calling her servants but none of them seem to be around.


Sharda : Suniye, sun rahe hai aap?
Jijaji : Ji, boliye.
Sharda : Main kab se chila rahi hoon aur aap par asar hi nahin hota. chup chap akhbaar padhe jaa rahe hain. (I’ve been screaming for so long and you are here sitting quietly and reading newspaper!)
Jijaji : Aap kahe toh bhool ho gayi, main chilla ke akhbaar padna shuru kar deta hoon. (I’m sorry, I didn’t know I was to read it loud)
And he literally starts reading the paper loud. Sharda is a very dominating wife and hardly lets her husband speak. In case if he does get to voice his opinion, she screams : “Aap chup rahiye!” And he obediently replies : “Aap kahe toh bhool ho gayi!”

Sharda knows that Ashok is coming back after 5 years in Europe. He’s the only son of Seth Karamchand, the richest man around. So she feels he’s the most eligible boy in town for her sister, Kavita (Saroja Devi). Sharda wants Kavita to accompany her and go to receive Ashok at the airport but Kavita refuses because she is of a different opinion. She gives 2 reasons to justify her denial :          
1. Mujhe abhi shaadi nahin karni (I don’t want to get married now).
2. Ameer baap ke bete se mujhe saqt nafrat hai. Siwaye apne baap ke tukde todna use kuch nahin aata (I hate rich guys. They are too dependent on their father’s earnings and are not capable of standing on their own feet).
So off they go to the airport without Kavita. Sethji, Sharda and Jijaji are waiting at the airport and the plane’s landing. Sethji is very excited and says – main apne bete ko 5 baras ke baad dekhne jaa raha hoon..na jane kitna bada ho gaya hoga,  kaisa ho gaya hoga (I’m going to see my song after 5 years. Wonder how much he must have changed and grown).
Jijaji : 5 baras bada ho gaya hoga, zaroor!!! (He must have grown by 5 years now, of course! He says that as a matter of fact and with so much of enthu. I fell for him immediately.)

Everybody descends from the flight  but they can’t spot Ashok anywhere. So concluding that Ashok didn’t come by that flight, the party returns back home.

Kavita and her group of friends are on their way to college when a car passes by splashing slush on Kavita. But the gentleman, Ashok (Shammi Kapoor), behind the wheels drives back when he realizes what he has done. But before he can say anything the girls begin scolding him:
Starting with Kavita : Junglee, Jaanwar!!!
Her friends ask him : Aankhen bandh karke chalate ho? Apne baap ka sadak samajhte ho, dekha bechari ka sari kharab kar diya na? (Do you drive with your eyese closed? You think that this road is your father’s property?)
Ashok : I’m so sorry.
Kavita : Tumhare sorry keh dene se meri saari toh dhul nahin jayegi. (Your sorry wont clean my saree)
He offers to take her home where she could change and then would drop her to her college. But her friends misunderstand him and tell her : Ek number ka badmaash lagta hai. Pehle ghar dekhega, phir college aur phir naam poochega (He looks like a goon. He’ll first find out where you live, then the college where you study and thenwill ask for your name. His intentions don’t look good).
Enough is enough. He can’t take it any more. So much for his decency! So he offers her some money and tells her to get her saree dry cleaned/washed or get a new one…
She retorts : Bazaar mein akal aur tameez mile toh isi note se khareed lena thode aadmi ban jaoge! (Keep the money to yourself. Buy some wit and good manners if you come across any. That will at least make you a little human.)


Meanwhile, one of her friends punctures his car tyre.
Ashok : Oh, what do I look like now?
Kavita : Budtameez!


(How convenient na…All they have to do is to recite the names of his movies : Junglee, Jaanwar, Budtameez, Pagla Kahin Ka when they have to scold him. I have noticed this in quite a lot of movies and I just love it!)

Ashok goes to a garage (Desuza, Decruz and Fernandes Garage) and calls out for DeSuza. Somebody answers that he’s dead. Next, he calls for Decruz and the same voice replies that he’s dead too.

Finally, he calls for Fernandes and Fernandes(Johney Walker) crawls out from under a car saying : Zinda hai (he’s alive).
It turns out that Ashok and Fernandes were school buddies but Fernandes wasn’t interested in studies. So his uncle took him under his wing and taught him the trick of the trade and gave him a job in his garage.He concludes saying – Apni toh yeh life hai bhaiya aur abhi tak without wife hai (This is my life bro and I’m still without a wife). Fernandes fixes his car and off he goes.


He reaches home and his father is pretty annoyed that he didn’t inform him that he wasn’t coming by flight, knowing that he would go to the airport to recieve him. But one look of regret from his son and the father melts. Ashok explains that his friend, Shamu asked him to drive home instead of taking the flight. Hence, he took his car and came over.

They sit down to dine, on a huge dining table and they sit at opposite ends (Love the way they converse here. They can’t even see each other directly, the lamp comes in between and they keep bending on opposite sides while talking so that one is visible to the other).

Ashok tells Chandu that he missed all these delicacies so much in Europe. He went to so many restaurants hunting for proper food but he couldn’t find anything as deletable as what Chandu has prepared.
Sethji : So you just went around hunting for good food. How about work?
Ashok : I worked hard as well. You will get the reports soon, you can see it for yourself.
Sethji : Did you get to go around and see the places as well or were you burried in work all the time?
Ashok : Oh no…I did go to lots of places – Rome, Venice, Berlin, Paris, London etc
Sethji : What did you like the most there?
Ashok : Girls! (with such a casual attitude. As though he meant saying : what else did you expect?)
Then he realizes what he has just said and gets choked.
Sethji : Chandu, how old is Ashok now?
Chandu : Maalik, you shud get him married now. You were a father at his age.

The next day he goes out and sees Kavita and her friends at a petrol pump. He overhears them mention putting up at Ashok Hotel. He follows them. And they all shower him with the same gaalis again calling him Aawara, Loafer, Badmaash, Junglee etc. He accepts that he spoiled her saree that day but even they punctured his tyre, so it’s not fair to label only him a budtameez.
Ashok : Main aapko yakeen dilana chahata hoon ke main man, dharam aur karam ka bahut hi nek, pavitra aur shareef insaan hoon. Mauka aane par apni sharafat ka namuna pesh karunga. Jai Hind! (For your kind information I’m a good decent guy and will prove it to you when the time comes).
In the mean time, during the conversation he manages to poke their tyre with something, leaving them behind with a flat tyre. He drives ahead and when he realizes that they have stopped their car, he gets down and offers some suggestions but nobody wants them.


He worries them all the more by singing Yun na dekho hume baar baar.

Finally Kavita and group reach Ashok Hotel and they declare they are from Sharda college but the Manager apologizes saying he couldn’t book a room for them as all the rooms are already filled. They all get worried because it’s dark already and they don’t know the place. They request the Manager to arrange for something but he says there isn’t anything much he can do. But if they would go and talk to the owner, they might get a room if their luck favours them because there are roooms reserved for the owners.
Kavita, the leader of the group goes to speak to the owner. But when she realizes it’s Ashok she just walks out. But her friends are in no mood of going and searching for another place to spend the night. So they try convincing Ashok. They literally corner him. But he strikes a deal that he would give them a room provided their leader, Kavita comes and requests for it!
Pehle apne langoor jaisa shakal toh dekhe! Main request karoon?!!! – This is her reaction when she hears of the deal. But when her friends emotionally blackmail her into arranging an accomodation for them, she gives in and reqests Ashok to give them a room, which he immediately does.

The following morning Sethji also turns up at the hotel demanding the Manager for Book of Accounts. When he learns that Ashok’s there, he goes to his room. Kavita and group happen to be at the counter. Manager confides in them that Sethji is very short tempered. This gives her an idea to get Ashok into trouble. So she sends her friends one my one to Ashok’s room, all of them claiming to be his girlfriends. After the first one leaves, Ashok explains to his father that she’s gone crazy.


But when this continues, Sethji : Kya in sab ka dimaag kharab hai? (You mean to say all these girls have gone crazy?)
Ashok : Mumkin hai (It is possible)
Sethji : Ya phir mera dimaag kharab hai? (Or think think I’ve gone crazy to believe you?)
He orders Ashok to pack his bag immediately and leave with him.

It’s Ashok’s birthday and Sharda and Jijaji are getting ready for the party. Sharda wants Kavita to accomany them but Kavita refuses. Jijaji convinces her to join them and finally she gives in and goes with them to Sethji’s house. But the best part it she doesn’t know that her Badmaash, Junglee, Budtameez is the birthday boy. She’s quite surprised to find him even there. And ignores him as much as she can even after learning he’s Sethji’s son. Ashok is obviously hurt by her behaviour and asks her :
Ashok : What’s your problem with me?
Kavita : First impression is the last impression. You are a loafer, gunda, Roadside Romeo. The only thing you have learnt all these years is to pick on girls.
Ashok : If you stand by that, then there’s another saying that goes ‘Try try n try my boy until you succeed’. Mohabbat karengi ek din mujhse aap (you will fall in love with me someday).
Kavita : Mohabbat karegi meri juti (Fall in love with you? My foot!) I’ll fall for a guy who’s hard-working and earns a living for himself, not someone who’s used to enjoy and spend his father’s money.


Fernandes is in love with Rosy (Minoo Mumtaz), Dhumaal’s daughter. They own a small eat-joint and Fernandes usually eats there and doesn’t pay for his food. Rosy doesn’t mind but Dhumal is mad at him. So Fernandes is hiding from Dhumal because he owes him money. Fernandes and Rosy sneak away to the garage and dance to this lovely Rafi-Kamal Barot duet – Yahan bhi toh nahin hai wahan bhi toh nahin hai. Check the lyrics of this song – tu meri chevrolet hai, tu meri juliet hai…could there be a better song for a car-mechanic to sing?

Ashok wants to prove himself to Kavita. He wants to show her that even he can work hard and earn a living for himself. So he convinces Fernandes to give him a job at his garage. And he changes his name to Mohan from Ashok. One day Kavita is walking past the garage on her way back home from college, with few books in her hand. Mohan is fixing a car. Just as she crosses the car, he crawls out from beneath the car. She trips over his leg and almost falls down, the books however fall and he picks them up and gives them to her. With the impression she has of Ashok, she starts scolding him again. He claims he’s not Ashok but she doesn’t believe him. Finally when Fernandes addresses him as Mohan, she’s convinced that he’s a different man. She goes back home and realizes that one of her books is missing and is sure that it must have got misplaced when it fell at the garage. So she comes back to the garage  and goes to Mohan’s room. She sees him sitting in a small room and reading a book. Just because he’s poor she immediately develops a soft corner for him. He tells her that he’s a graduate. Just then she smells something burning. He realizes he was cooking daal. So he hurries to the kitchen. She helps him with the daal. In the mean time he narrates that he left his house because his father wanted him to get married to a  fashionable girl. But his mother always told him he should get married to girl who can cook and feed him with her hands. And he agrees with his mother. She feels shy and runs out of his room.

Kavita has a dance program in her college and invites Mohan for it. She dances to Arey o kanha bairi zamana.

Sharda is still trying to fix Kavita with Ashok. She invites Ashok home for tea. But Kavita is nowhere around and Sharda and Jijaji are feeling a little uneasy about it. But Ashok feels it’s time for some fun. So he reveals to them that Kavita is in love with a mechanic named Mohan at Desuza Decruz and Fernandes garage. He’s not at all surprised that she’s not at home. They don’t believe him but he takes them to the garage and asks Fernandes about Mohan and after a while he himself comes dressed as a Mechanic, Mohan. Sharda is mad at him. They have a very interesting argument.

Mohan : Aapne shaadi se pehle mohabbat nahin ki? (Didn’t you fall in love before getting married?)
Sharda : Ji nahin.,..hamare khandaan mein shaadi se pehle mohabbat karne ki reewaz nahin hai (We don’t have the tradition of falling in love before getting married in our family)
Jijaji : Ji haan, inke khandaan mein shaadi ke baad bhi mohabbat karne ki reewaz nahin hai (Oh yes, they don’t even have a tradition of falling in love after getting married in their family).
She warns him never to meet her sister again and goes.

One day Ashok comes home and Kavita is furious seeing him. But he tells her he’s Mohan. He’s dressed up as Ashok so that Sharda doesn’t suspect him. Sharda, thinking it’s Ashok sends Kavita with him and tells her to take him around the place. They sing this lovely song – Teri zulfen pareshaan.

Jijaji is not convinced that Ashok and Mohan are two different people. So he goes to Mohan’s room and investigates. It doesn’t take him long to find the truth. He goes back home happily only to see Sharda and Kavita quarelling over Ashok and Mohan. When he finally gets a chance to speak he tells them that Ashok’s been fooling both of them – Ashok and Mohan are not two different people but one and the same!

Kavita goes to his room at the garage to confront him. He’s humming Tumne pukara aur hum chale aaye as he’s getting dressed and exclaims : “Woh aaye ghar mein hamare khuda ke kudrat hai.Kabhi hum unko kabhi apne ghar ko dekhte hai” when he sees her. He can make out that she’s not in the best of her moods so asks her if everything’s ok.
Kavita : My family wants me to get married to this guy who I totally dislike. Main sochti hoon phir tumhara kya hoga, tum toh zehar kha loge (But more than that I am worried about you. What would happen to you if I get married to somebody else? You might kill yourself).
Mohan : Zehar khaye mere dushman, main toh baratiyon ke saath mithai khaunga, mithai. (Now, how do I translate that!) Ashok’s not as bad as you think he is….he’s a nice guy and he loves you so much. And I am not as innocent as you think. I have a secret.
Kavita : Secret? Are you married already?
Mohan : Not married but I am engaged to a very rich girl. Now if you get married to Ashok even I will get to marry her without feeling guilty about it.

She yells at him and he realizes that she has learnt the truth and tries to reason with her.
Ashok : You love one name and hate the other one, but the person is one – me. Pati hone ke liye 4 cheez hone chahiye (there are 4 qualities that guys should have to become a husband) and I have all the 4 things.
1. Main shehar ka sab se bada raheez hoon – Ashok (I’m the richest person in town)
2. Main awwal darze ka aashiq hoon – Mohan (I’m a lover boy)
3. Main bahut bada kalakaar hoon kyunki tumhe meri ek roop se mohabbat hai aur doosre se nafrat (I’m a great actor. You love one and you hate the other form of mine)
4. Main dil ka achha hoon aur shareer ka tandurust…yaani ke hamare hone wale bachche tandurust honge, mote honge, kuch tumhare jaise honge aur kuch mere jaise. (I’m good at heart and am physically fit. That means our children will be healthy and they will look a little like you and a little like me)
Kavita : Tum mujhe seedhi tarah se ghar jaane doge ya nahin (Will you let me go home?)
Ashok : Ab tum us ghar mein jaa kar kya karogi? Ladki toh parayi hoti hai. Aur yeh tumhare gharwale bhi jaante hai. Ab maan bhi jao. Tum mujhe chahe boora samjho ya achha samjho maine yeh sab tumhara pyaar jitne ke liye kiya. Yeh na kisi gareeb ka pyaar hai na kisi ameer ka, yeh ek insaan ka pyaar hai jisne tumhe apne dil se pyaar kiya (What will you do going to that house? You will anyways have to get married and leave it someday. Whether you think good of me or bad of me, I did all this to win your  love. This is neither a rich man’s love nor a poor man’s love, it’s true love and I love you from the bottom of my heart).
They sing Oh jaanewale sun zara yeh dil ka maajra and everything is settled between them.

Both their families are happy about the alliance. Sethji even engages himself  in selecting jewelleries and sarees for his bahu.
I wish the film had ended here. It was so delightful till here. But a Hindi film of 60’s just couldn’t happen without any conflict and it couldn’t end here, right? There has to be a twist. Especially when the hero has finally wooed the heroine and all is well and none of their families opposes to it, there has to be some twist to separate the two of them.
Ashok leaves for Shyamnagar to attend a friend’s wedding. Ashok and few other friends pull Shekhar’s (the groom) leg and keep worrying him. But just when the wedding ceremonies are about to begin, Shekhar’s dad takes him and leaves – the wedding is cancelled. No, it’s not for dowry. He discovers that the bride had earlier run away with someone and he feels it will be a disgrace to accept her as his daughter-in-law now. Ashok begs with Shekhar not to dishonour the girl’s family. He tries to reason with him saying everybody makes a mistake, that doesn’t mean that you behave this way and ruin somebody’s life for one mistake. But all his efforts go in vain.

Seeing the state in which bride’s father and mother are in, he offers to marry their daughter. He gets married without even seeing the girl and then takes her home and goes. But Sethji isn’t very pleased with him for what he has done. He kicks him out of the house. So Ashok goes back to the garage and lives there with his wife, Sheila (Parveen Choudhary).


Sharda and Jijaji are shocked to hear the news. Kavita blames him for cheating on her. Ashok wanders along singing Main bewafa nahin hoon tere pyaar ki kasam. But Jijaji tells her it’s not fair to reach a conclusion without knowing the entire truth.So she sets out to find the truth. She goes to Ashok’s house and meets Sheila.  And the poor soul pours her heart out  to her.

 Kavita feels guilty for accusing Ashok of infidelity. She sings O maine mana mere meet.

Kavita still loves Ashok (after finding out the truth) but Ashok comes in terms with his life. He accepts that it was not in his fate to marry Kavita and is content with what he has got. He tries his best to forget his past and to start his life afresh with Sheila. Even her past doesn’t bother him. He doesn’t blame her for coming in between him and Kavita but accepts her whole-heartedly and does his best to be a good husband. So what next???

What happens to Kavita?  Ashok and Sheila are quite happily married. What will happen to this love triangle? Will Sethji finally accept Sheila as his daughter-in-law? Will Sharda ever forgive Ashok for what he has done to Kavita?

I loved the first half of the movie. It was truly amazing! It had comedy, emoshun, romance and beautiful songs. Second half wasn’t very necessary. I felt like it was just put to make the story longer. And to show that love is all about sacrifice.

On the whole I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, except for the end. Shammi Kapoor in his Black&White days is delicious! Saroja Devi is beautiful. Johney Walker and Minoo Mumtaz’s romance is cute. Parveen Choudhary, Nasir Hussain, Dhumaal and Shammi are all great. And whoever the man playing Jijaji is (Siddhu?), I totally loved him – he was so witty and his one liners were simply awesome! Kalyanji-Anandji’s music , assisted by Laxmikant-Pyarellal is fabulous. Songs were penned by Anand Bakshi, Qamar Jalalabadi, Gulshan Bawra and Indivar and were rendered by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Kamal Barot. Great direction from S. Bannerjee!

I would rate it 7.5/10.

P.S : He looks familiar. I haven’t seen Ek Musafir Ek Haseena yet, but I think I have seen him somewhere, may be in Dil Deke Dekho.

Ziddi (1964)

Ashok (Joy Mukherjee), is the youngest son in the family of Judge Sachin Shankar (Ulhas) and Mumtaz Begum.

He has two brothers and a younger sister (Lata Sinha). Both his brothers  are married and one of his sisters-in-law is Bela Bose. She hardly makes an appearance for 2 mins, what a waste of character!

Sachin is a pretty strict parent who wants everybody at breakfast table by 8 AM and expects all his sons to go to work and earn their living. The other two are great sons as per him who are professionally and financially settled in life and his only complain is about Ashok, who’s still in bed when everybody else has already gathered for breakfast. And he’s also not happy about Ashok wanting to become a writer.

Ashok goes to meet a publisher (Murad), who also doesn’t approve of his choice of profession because he thinks Ashok doesn’t look like a writer!!! (Now what’s that supposed to mean?)

Mr. Chaterjee (Asit Sen) makes an entry here and the publisher tells him that he has been summoned to Ooty by Thakur Mahendra Singh (Raj Mehra) as the Manager of his Tea Estate. And apart from looking after the Tea Estate his job would also include keeping an eye on Asha (Asha Parekh), Thakur’s daughter. He gives Mr. Chaterjee Asha’s photo, where she’s posing beside an elephant with a gun and gives him a brief introduction saying – “Yeh Thakur saab ki beti hai, Asha. Aur uski teen hi shauk hai zindagi mein – Sheron ki shikar, haati aur ghodon ki sawari and aadmi ke kapde pehena aur unko neecha dikhana” (This is Thakur’s daughter, Asha and she lives just for three things – to kill tigers, to ride horses and elephants and to wear men’s outfit and to make them feel inferior).

Ashok also sees Asha’s pic and is totally smitten. He has a feeling that if he gets to meet her he can come up with a story that would establish him as an Author. He takes her pic and goes on the road singing Teri surat se nahin milti kisi ki surat . Judge spots him singing by the swimming pool and takes him back home. Finding Ashok’s behaviour weird, he feels Ashok must be suffering from some illness and calls a Doctor. Doctor says he’s fine, it’s just that he’s suffering from loneliness –  which he finds all the more weird – lonely in a house full of peaople?! Doctor then goes on to explain that they should get Ashok married. At this, the entire family literally runs out of the house in search of a girl, leaving bewildered Ashok behind.

Ashok runs away from his house and goes to Ooty.

Judge is furious to find Ashok gone and is all the more angry when he discovers Ashok’s note that says :  “Zindagi bhar gadha na reh jaun, isi liye romance aur adventure ki talaash mein jaa raha hoon” (I don’t want to remain a fool all my life, that’s why I am off in search of Adventure and Romance).

He’s almost robbed off his belongings in the train by Mohan Choti while he’s asleep – And this scene is hilarious…Ashok’s dreaming about Asha and is blabbering in his sleep. That’s when Mohan Choti enters his compartment and what follows is very funny – extremely situational monologue from Ashok and Mohan’s expressions just perfect to blend with the scene. This is once of my favourite scenes in the film.

When Ashok finally wakes up and realizes that his suitcase is nowhere around, he follows Mohan and jumps out of the train behind him. Just then they hear a gunshot and Mohan drops Ashok’s suitcase and runs away. Ashok then spots Asha with a gun and she screams at him for scaring her prey away – according to her, the tiger she was about to shoot ran away because of Ashok 😛

She takes her jeep and drives away. Ashok retrieves his belongings and starts walking towards some civilization from the jungle he is in. Back at Thakur’s (Raj Mehra) house, everybody’s searching for the jeep. The new Manager was arriving and Mahesh (Mehmood), their driver was supposed to go to the station to receive him but both the Jeep and the driver are missing.

Seema (Nazima), Asha’s sister is sure that Asha must have taken the Jeep and Thakur is very angry about the whole affair and promises to scold Asha when she gets back. Lakshmi (Sulochna), Thakur’s wife, is hurt that Seema isn’t very fond of her sister and keeps complaining about her. And both Thakur and Lakshmi are busy blaming each other for spoiling Asha. In between this, Asha drives in complaining that somebody scared her prey away. And on being asked about Mahesh, she tells her pet, Majnu (an elephant) to bring him back. Poor soul was put in a drum and kept under Majnu’s invigilation.

Both her parents are extremely fond of her and they easily forgive her for all the pranks she’s upto and overlook them. As a result, Asha is such a spoilt brat, stubborn to the core and quite irritating as well.

Mahesh is then sent to the station to bring the Manager. On his way he sees Ashok walking with a suitcase and assumes him to be the new Manager. So he brings him home and introduces Ashok to everybody as the new Manager of Mahendra tea State.

Asha is furious to see him home and tries all the possible pranks to get him kicked out. She isn’t very successfull in doing so but she doesn’t give up.

 As a punishment for taking the Jeep in the morning, Thakur prohibits her from going to the Jalsa (a local fete) that night. And Ashok is instructed to keep an eye on her and make sure that she doesn’t even step out of the house.

Stubborn and bent on proving how inefficient Ashok is, she sneaks out of the house and in a hurry mounts an untamed horse and sets off. When Ashok realizes this, he goes behind on another horse, saves her and brings her back home, literally drops her on her bed and locks her room from outside. But she calls Majnu below her balcony, jumps on her back and goes to the Jalsa and dances to Raat ka samaa jhume chandrama.

Ramdas (Dhumal), is the Supervisor of the Tea Estates. He has a very pretty daughter Sheela (Shubha Khote) who’s madly in love with Mahesh. But Ramdas doesn’t approve of their romance and picks up a quarrel with Mahesh for the silliest of reasons.

Ashok takes up his job as the new Manager the following day. It’s almost 12:30 in the afternoon, he tells Ramdas to break for lunch at 1 and heads home for lunch himself.

Mahesh also takes a break saying he’s going to meet Sheela. On his way, Ashok sees Asha perched on a tree branch chewing Sugarcane, he flirts a little with her and she instructs Majnu to pick him up and throw him in the well, which Majnu obediently follows.

Mahesh sees Sheela getting lunch for her father and walking towards the Tea Estate. He asks her for some food and they climb the clock tower where she feeds him. He sets the time to 11insh hoping to spend some more time with her. Ramdas is hungry and keeps waiting for his daughter who doesn’t turn up. When he glances up to the clock tower to see the time, he is surprised  and figures out that something’s wrong.  So he sets out to investigate. When Mahesh sees him, he runs away at such a speed and without even looking around that he also ends up in the same well as Ashok. They somehow manage to get out.

 And now, Ashok feels it’s time to do something to tame Asha. But he has to get across Majnu before reaching Asha. So he prepares himself for the mission.

He manages to make friends with Majnu. And with his help, he sort of kidnaps Asha and sings Pyaar ki manzil mast safar. Now that Majnu is on Ashok’s side, Asha decides to sell the disloyal Elephant. She sits on Majnu and begins the auction. Ashok comes disguised as an Arabic and buys the Elephant for a huge amount. When she dismounts after the deal is done, he jokes with her saying, he had bought the entire package for that much, ie the elephant along with her on his back!

There’s a lot of drama in between. Ashok comes across a letter sent by Mr. Chatterjee, the original supposedly new Manager of the estate – who has written saying he fell ill and couldn’t come on time but now that he has recovered, he would be arriving soon. It’s just because Mahesh thought he was the Manager, he was brought to the house and given the job. He’s worried and thinks of going back home. When Mahesh learns the truth he decides to help Ashok. They both go to receive Mr. Chatterjee, who comes marching to the background score of “So he’s a jolly good fellow”. They take him to a fake graveyard haunted by Sheela clad in a black saree and they tell him that all the people killed by Asha are burried in this graveyard.

She hates Managers and there’s a slot especially reserved for Managers. At this Mr. Chatterjee runs away from there and is never heard of again.

Seema was out of town all this while and Ashok had never met her. One evening he’s sitting in his room typing his story and reciting some lines (he has quite a shayarana andaaz, the way he flirts around with Asha, the lines he uses –  they are very poetic and very very romantic), a dog happens to sneak in and Seema comes following the dog. He’s pleasantly surprised to discover another pretty lady in the house. And she’s a very sweet girl and they get along very well from the very beginning. When he notices Asha observing them, he makes fun of Asha and she walks away in a rage.

At the Jalsa, when Mahesh spots Ramdas sitting with Ashok, he drapes a dupatta over him and Sheela introduces him as Roopmati, her widowed friend to Ramdas. Ramdas falls madly in love with Roopmati. He continues pretending to be Roopmati at few more occassions.

 At one of them he flirts with Ramdas as Roopmati and then fools him and sneaks out of the house with Sheela singing Main tere pyaar mein kya kya na bana and at another Roopmati agrees to marry him provided that he gets Sheela married first. But some Astrologer had told Ramdas that he would die if Sheela gets married and has a child. When Mahesh discovers this, he confides in Ashok about it. And Ashok decides to help Mahesh,  disguised as a Sadhu baba, he  tells Ramdas to get his daughter married within seven days or else he’ll die. Ramdas’s in a dilemma now…one astroger told him that he’ll die if he gets Sheela married and now another is telling him that he would die if he doesn’t get her married.

Asha happens to cross by just then and Ashok, disguised as Sadhu baba, takes advantage of the situation, tells her few things about her at which she’s shocked (a Sadhu who knows so much about her) then tells her that she should dress properly…she’s a girl and should behave like one, mustn’t go around hunting tigers all the time…blah blah and at the end he says if she goes on this way, Ashok might choose Seema over her.

She goes back home and sits infront of the mirror, tries on a little make up and even wears a saree. The she goes down hoping Ashok would see her.

She gets mad at Ashok when she sees him sitting and talking so sweetly to Seema.

Seema is going for a picnic with her friends and invites Ashok to join them. He happily accepts the invitation and asks Asha if she would like to come along as well….

Asha : Jahannum mein jao! (Go to hell!)

Ashok : Akele jaane mein mazaa nahina ayega, aap bhi chaliye na (it won’t be fun going alone, why don’t u come along as well)

At the picnic, Ashok and Seema are busy with their sheron-shayari when her friends ask him to sing a song. He says : “If I knew how to sing, wouldn’t I have become an actor?” And then he hears Majnu and realizes that Asha is somewhere around. So he jumps around singing Janu kya mera dil ab kahan kho gaya.

By the end of the song, Asha ties some balloons to the basket in which Seema’s doggy is sitting and the basket flies away. Seema gets all hysteric seeing her doggy so helpless up in the air.

 Ashok scolds Asha and she replies saying : “Badla lena hai na, toh mere Majnu ko gubbare se bandhke suraj pe bhejde. Kutta bahut romantic ho raha tha isi liye maine usse chand pe bhej diya romance karne” ( Take revenge , do the same thing with my Majnu, tie balloons to him and send him to the sun. Your dog was getting very romantic, that’s why I sent him to the moon to romance).

Ramdas gives in and gets Sheela married to Mahesh.

Ashok continues flirting with Seema, even more when Asha is around, just to make her feel jealous. But Seema, unaware of Ashok’s intention, takes everything he says seriously and actually falls in love with him.  They go out one day and Asha sees Seema very happy with Ashok. At this sight, Asha loses her control and shoots Ashok. He falls down in the lake.

He doesn’t appear on the surface….it’s then that she realizes what she has done. Full of regret, she goes running back to the place where she had met Sadhu baba to seek his help. When she deosn’t find him there, she confesses her love for Ashok and starts talking to herself. Ashok, knowing she would come there, swims out and comes right there. For a while he converses with her from behind the bush as the Sadhu baba but after a while he comes out of his hiding and they declare their love for each other and sing Champakali dekho chhu ke jaadu kiya mere pyaar ne.

Ashok writes to his parents about Asha and asks them to come over. Thakur Mahendra Singh and his wife also find out that they are in love with each other and they readily accept Ashok into their family. Only Seema is heart-broken.

Just after Mahesh and Sheela get married, the first Astrologer comes and scolds Ramdas for not listening to him. He tells him the Sadhu who told him to get Sheela married was a fake. Ramdas gets very scared and doesn’t even let Mahesh touch Sheila. Mahesh is so sad –  Pyaar ki aag mein tan badan jal gaya.

Ashok’s family comes over to Ooty and all is well….

 …but how can we have such a simple and smooth climax, right?….So here comes the twist – Judge sees a photo hung on the wall of Thakur Mahendra Singh’s house and that triggers a lot of memories – he immediately refuses to get Ashok married to Asha as he knows of Asha’s parentage –  a father who is an escaped convict, in jail for murder, and a mother whose profession was: prostition. And then everybody is surprised to see Asha drunk – singing and dancing to Yeh meri zindagi ek pagal hawa at a party.

And in between all this, Moti (Madan Puri) makes an entry.

Who is Moti? What’s the secret behind Asha’s family? How will Seema react to all this? Will she take revenge? What happens to Mahesh and Sheela? Does Ramlal ever get to know the truth behind Roopmati?

Not a hard ending to guess at all 🙂

I really like Joy Mukherjee and it’s Rafi’s songs and Joy that made me watch this movie. If you are not very fond of Joy Mukherjee, be content listening to or watching the songs on Youtube for Rafi. Well, I am not scaring anybody away….but there’s nothing much in the movie to like. I did like few things like the scene between Ashok and Mohan Choti in the train, Ashok flirting with both the sisters but it wasn’t right of him to play with Seema’s emotions the way he did, Mahesh and Sheela’s romance which was very cute ( I really like this couple and it wasn’t irritatingly OTT), can’t say the same about Ashok and Asha though, it was too short. Ashok spent more than half the movie pursuing Asha, the rich, spoilt-brat. Everybody looked good, so that was one consolation but other than that, I didn’t find the movie all that great. It was average and one time watchable, but I don’t see myself watching this movie again.

I do adore Asha Parekh but in this movie she was very screechy and irritating. Missed the Love in Tokyo chemistry. But Nazima made up for that, she was very cute and sweet. Wonder how and why Joy didn’t fall for her. I hardly said anything good about the movie….it isn’t all that bad either and I don’t regret watching it. I would rate it 6 (only 5 for the story, extra point for all the other things I liked about the movie. Had Asha been better, it would definitely have scored 7 + for me).

Before I start with Rajesh Khanna special this week, there are two movies that have to write about. They have been pending for more than two weeks now.

After I read memsaab’s review of Aakhri Khat, I went to all the video stores in the city hunting for it and finally found it in one. There I saw Boyfriend (though it was a VCD and not a DVD). Not that I need an excuse to buy a Shammi Kapoor film, but doesn’t this look tempting?

The movie begins with a little boy running on the street in a dark night with few men behind his heels. He halts to catch his breath just below this notice on a wall.

An elderly couple visit a temple. One of the pujaris enquires as to who they are and why they come to visit the temple every year on the 2nd of January. The elder pujari introduces them as Thakur Harcharan Singh (Shivraj) and his wife, Rajni Singh (Amirbai Karnataki) from Ambala.  22 years ago, they had lost their son elder son, Madan. So they come every year on that day with a hope of finding him someday.

In Shimla, Madan aka Shyam is being released from  jail after being arrested for the second time for petty theft. First time he was arrested as Madan and later on as Shyam. Inspector returns him his gold locket and sends him off with a piece of advice on leading a good life ahead.Also says no matter how many times he changes his name, but he’ll get caught everytime he does something wrong.

In Thakur Harcharan Singh’s house in Bombay, they are talking about Madan. Even after all these years Rajni feels that they will find him someday. Their younger son Sunil (Dharmendra) makes an entry at this point. He’s a Police Officer and says he is working on a murder case and wont be returning home that night. Rajni is diappointed the he goes around solving everybody else’s problems but doesnt put in enough effort to find Madan. Then in typical filmy ma style she says : Na jane mera Madan kahan hoga, kis haal mein hoga  (Don’t know where my Madan is, how he is).

At this, the scene shifts to the scenic beauty of Shimla and finally we get a proper glimpse of Madan/Shyam’s (Shammi Kapoor) singing Mujhe apna yaar banalo .

Enroute to Bombay, Shyam meets Shantilal in the train. When Shantilal addresses him as Madan, he says he’s Shyam and not Madan. They were together in Shimla jail during Shyam’s first sentence. Shantilal is ill and he tells Shyam about his daughters – Sangeeta and Sushma who live in Bombay.  He had left his family and fled Bombay after taking Rs. 50,000 from Thakur Harcharan Singh.

Shyam tells him they will go together to Bombay and find his daughters. But the following morning he gets up to find Shantilal gone. As he had given a word to Shantilal that he would find Sangeeta and Sushma, he sets out on his mission the moment he reaches Bombay. He asks every girl he meets if her name is Sangeeta/Sushma. Finally he bumps into Sushma (Nishi) but by the time he realizes it’s her, it’s too late, she’s already gone.

Thakur Harcharan Singh is the owner of Stage Center. And Sangeeta does dance shows for him. Shyam reaches the stage and stands outside. Thakur and his wife pass by him.

They see Sangeeta (Madhubala) practicing dance inside and praise her for all the hard work she’s putting up for the show. Sangeeta says she’s dancing so that she can earn enough to pay her father’s debts to him. That’s the Director/Dance Master of Thakur’s shows in the picture.

There’s this guy hiding in the shadow and eyeing Rajni’s necklace. He manages to steal it when she is leaving Stage Center.

Sunil arrives at that very moment and seeing Shyam there he suspects him of stealing the necklace. He takes Shyam’s talashi but doesnt find anything on him and lets him go. When police arrives the real theif  puts the necklace in Sangeeta’s makeup box kept in a taxi and runs away. But Shyam sees him putting the necklace.

So Shyam goes to Sangeeta’s house in the night and steals the necklace from her makeup box. He battles against his will to sell it and finally decides to return it to Sunil the following morning hoping it would give him a chance to prove him that he’s innocent. When he’s still making up his mind on the next course of action, a Hawaldar on duty spots him and asks him what he’s doing there so late in the night. He says he came in search of Sangeeta. On being asked if Sangeeta knows him, he tells the Hawaldar to take him to Sangeeta and he could see it for himself. The moment Shyam tells he knows Shantilal, Sangeeta calls him in. Hawaldar now convinced that he had actually come to meet her, leaves assured.

Both Sangeeta and Sushma are delighted to hear about Shantilal but are hurt at the sametime that he himself didnt come to meet them. As it starts raining very heavily outside, they ask Shyam to stay back that night. Seeing Sangeeta sleeping, he sings Salaam aapki meethi nazar ko.

The sisters get up in the morning to find him gone. Shyam goes to Thakur’s house early the next morning to return the necklace.  But he is stopped by Sampat (Dhumal), Thakur’s man servant. When Sampat learns that Shyam has come to return the stolen necklace he flicks it off from Shyam’s pocket. Unaware of this Shyam goes to Sunil but is surprised himself when he finds the necklace gone from his pocket.  Anyways, he tells Sunil that he has changed now and will find some proper job soon.

Sunil and Sushma are in love. Sushma has a pic of Sunil inside her book and is busy talking to his pic when the phone rings.

It’s Sunday, the only day when Sunil’s off. He tells her he’s coming to her house to meet her. But she has a prior commitment of going shopping with Sangeeta. She makes up an excuse and manages to send Sangeeta alone.

Here Shyam goes to Sethji (who seems to be extremely fond of Shyam) to clear his earlier debts. Shyam owns a room in Bombay and Sethji says he’s planning to get his son married that year and asks if Shyam could give his room to his son. During the conversation Shyam discovers that Thakur and Director are in search of a tall, fair and handsome hero (there’s so much stress on this – 6 foot ka lamba, khubsoorat sa naujawan) for their play “Boyfriend” to cast opposite Sangeeta.

Off he goes to meet Thakur who approves of him at first sight itself. But they still ask him to give an audition and he dances to Mujhe apna yaar banalo and bags the role. He’s introduced to the entire unit including Sangeeta but she puts up her price and doesnt even talk to him properly because he left home that morning without even telling them and she’s angry with him! But not for long (And I dont blame her for that. How could anyone resist his charm for long?)

They sing Aaigo aaigo yeh kya ho gaya on their way home. He drops her at her place and goes to his room. Shantilal comes to see him. He says he doesnt have the courage to face his daughters after all that they have had to go through because of him and the debts he had taken. He is very ill and knows he’s dying. He gives Bhagwat Geeta to Shyam, tells him to give it to his daughters and dies.

The sisters are devastated by the news. And Shyam consoles them.

The all leave for Shimla for a Stage show there. Their show in Shimla “Miya Biwi”  – Dekho Na Jaao Ae Jaan E Man  proves to be a huge success.

After the show is over Shyam and sangeeta go skating. Sangeeta falls down and breaks her leg. This accident leaves her crippled and she can’t dance anymore. Shyam holds himself responsible for it.

She’s all sad and depressed thinking that Shyam may not like her anymore. But Shyam says he’s in love with her soul and she’ll always remain the same for him. But she says she can never dance with him again.  To which he says he had joined the theatre for her and not because he enjoys dancing and acting.
 Sangeeta : You are god to me

Shyam :  What do you know about me to treat me as your god?

Sangeeta : You think I need to know you more than what I already do? What I know of you is more than enough and I trust you more than anyone else

Once they are back in Bombay, Shyam goes to Banwarilal to buy a gift for Sangeeta. He says he needs something that will cheer her up. And Banwari shows him a necklace. Shyam feels it’s similar to Rajni’s necklace that was stolen but Banwari argues that there can be more than one necklace of the same design.

Now that Sangeeta can no longer work for him, Thakur sends his manager (Moolchand) to Sangeeta’s place asking them to either pay his debt of Rs. 50,000 or to vacate the house. He says if they can arrange for Rs. 2,000 (i.e., the interest amount) in 2-3 days, then he can convince Thakur to give them a time of one month to pay the remaining amount. He even gives them a court notice.

Shyam is shocked by Thakur’s behaviour. 

Thakur on the other hand is looking for a heroine for his play. He wants a girl to cast opposite Shyam in “Boyfriend”. But Shyam arrives at that very moment and says he wont work with Thakur anymore. He has an argument with Thakur on how he has treated Sangeeta. Shyam challenges Thakur that a day will come when he’ll have to beg Sangeeta for help and that day he would think of him(there’s so much of stress on 6 foot ka haseen naujawan again. In fact this is how Thakur addresses him throughout the movie).

Sangeeta, Sushma and Shyam are desparately in need of Rs. 2,000 so that they dont lose their shelter at least. Shyam sets out to sell the necklace he had bought for Sangeeta. But since he asks only for Rs. 2,000 for it, everyone feels there’s something fishy about it and nobody buys it.

Tensed that he couldnt arrange for money, he sings Mujhe apna yaar banalo once again (this looks like an all-purpose song ;-)). He gets an idea. He goes to Sethji, gives his room to Sethji’s son and takes Rs. 2,000 in return.

Then he goes to Thakur, deposits Rs. 2,000 and takes a receipt. Now the sisters won’t have to leave the house at least. But Sunil comes and asks him where he got the moeny from. He still feels that Shyam has stolen it. Thakur offers Shyam to come back to stage but Shyam says if he comes back on stage it’ll be with Sangeeta. He again says the 6 foot ka haseen naujawan dialogue – in short, every dog has its day!

Shyam goes to consult a doctor. After seeing Sangeeta’s reports he says she can be cured and she’ll be able to dance again. But he says he will have to do a major operation and that will cost Rs. 5000. Shyam says he’ll arrange for the amount and fixes an appointment with the doctor.

He goes back home to find Sangeeta sleeping (which she’s only pretending to). He sings Dheere Chal Dheere Chal Ae Bheegi Hawa (asks hawa to dheere chal meri bulbul ki hai neenden jawaan and he himself sings so loud :-D)
He keeps the necklace that he had bought for her on her neck. At the end of the song, she wears the it and comes out.
Sangeeta : You think I’ll look good if I wear this?
Shyam : No, now that you’ve finally worn it I feel the necklace looks beautiful. I bought it from the footpath for Rs. 2.25 but it has become priceless

Sangeeta : You are not a human, you are god!
Shyam : Call me whatever you want but dont ever call me god

Sangeeta : If that’s the case shall I tell you the truth?

Shyam : What truth?

Sangeeta : The truth is that you are a theif!
Shyam : A theif?
Sangeeta : Yes, a theif.
Shyam : What did I steal?
Sangeeta : So you are saying you havent stolen anything?
Shyam : No, I havent stolen anything
Sangeeta : Then why are you getting nervous?
Shyam : I’m not nervous
Sangeeta (laughing) :You have stolen my heart away!

Phew!!!! That was such a releif to Shyam 😀

Sunil comes to Sangeeta’s house, meets Sushma and warns her that Shyam’s not a nice man. Sushma tries to defend Shyam. Sangeeta enters the room and Sunil sees the stolen necklace on Sangeeta’s neck.


He asks her where she got the necklace from. He also tells her that it’s a stolen stuff. He threatens them that if they dont tell him who gave that necklace to her, he will arrest both of them. Finally Sushma admits that Shyam gave it.

Sampat’s dream of robbing Thakur (has been eyeing his safe from the very beginning) finally comes true when he finds out the combination to safe’s lock. But he needs a partner to execute his plan. He tells Sevakram (Maruti Rao) to send someone. Sevakram informs Shyam about it. As Shyam desparately needs Rs. 5,000 for Sangeeta’s operation, he accomapnies Sampat in his mission.

Unaware that Sunil has revealed about him, Shyam comes home to Sangeeta. He’s shocked himself to find that it was the same (stolen) necklace. But there’s no way he can prove his innocence. He says he’s going to surrender himself to police but Sangeeta doesnt let him go. Police siren rings, but he runs away before police could arrive. He manages to escape but leaves his gold locket behind.

Thakur and his wife recognize the locket as Madan’s. And they realize that Shyam is their son. They send Sunil to find Shyam.

Shyam comes to Sangeeta’s house disguised as  Sardar Guruvachan Singh (owner of a theatre company in Shimla who wants to cast her in his next play). He takes her to the doctor (with whom he had fixed an appointment earlier). After an operation Sangeeta is cured. She can walk and dance now.

Someone’s been following Guruvachan Singh. Thinking it’s Sunil’s trick to arrest him, he tries to mislead his follower that leads to a hilarious sequence. And this ends with Kyon Jee Mujhe Pehchaa.

Sunil makes a masterplan to arrest Shyam. And when he finally succeeds in doing so Shyam tells Sunil : “It’s my misfortune that I can neither convince you nor Sangeeta that I am innocent.” There’s one more song here – Dekho na jao ae berehem

When Rajni sees Shyam, she hugs him tight and says : Madan beta, where were you all these years? Pagla kahin ka!!! But the twist here is that he refuses to admit he is Madan.

What happens next? Will they ever find the real Madan? Will Sampat get caught? What happens to Sangeeta?

I enjoyed watching the movie but there was nothing wow about it (except for Shammi)! Definitely not one of his best movies either but entertaining enough to keep one glued to his/her seat esp if you are a Shammi Kapoor fan.

I didn’t find Madhubala all that great like in her other movies. She looked kind of exhausted throughout. Chirpy and feisty, Nishi is good but her dialogues get irritating at times. It being one of Dharmendra’s earlier movies, he looks and sounds  novice. I just couldn’t  imagine him screaming “Kutte, Kamine…main tera khoon pee jaaunga” at this point of time.

But it isn’t all that bad either 😀 Shankar Jaikishan’s music is good. And as I had mentioned in my earlier post, I have a soft corner for songs the moment I recognize Rafi’s voice.

I would say it’s Shammi’s movie all the way! And if I watch it again it would be only for Shammi Shammi and Shammi (though that was the case now as well).
